What is AVID? Advancement via Individual Determination

AVID trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and a career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
AVID brings research‐based strategies and curriculum to educational institutions in elementary, secondary, and higher education. The AVID System annually provides more than 30,000 educators with training and methodologies that develop students’ critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas throughout the entire campus, in what we call school wide AVID.

TUMWATA IS AVID SCHOOLWIDE

AVID is schoolwide when a strong AVID system transforms the Instruction, Systems, Leadership, and Culture of a school, ensuring college readiness for all AVID Elective students and improved academic performance for all students based on increased opportunities. AVID is implemented not only at Tumwata, but also district-wide.

aVID AS AN ELECTIVE

  • AVID is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college and career eligibility and success

  • AVID aims to close the opportunity gap in public schools by providing a strong school culture and place for minority, rural, low-income and other students without a college-going tradition in their families.

  • AVID is for ALL students, but targets those in the academic middle.

WHO IS AN AVID STUDENT

AVID students are students in the academic middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:

  • Grades

  • Citizenship

  • Attendance

  • Desire and Determination

  • First in Family to Attend College

  • Historically Underrepresented ethnicity in 4-year Colleges

  • Economically Disadvantaged

  • Other Special Circumstances

While all of the criteria are considered for acceptance into the program, no single criteria will necessarily eliminate a student from consideration. The AVID program should reflect the demographics of the school it is serving. Students participating in special education, gifted and talented programs, and ELL will be considered for AVID based on the criteria listed above. Currently, there are a number of students from these groups successfully participating in the AVID program.

ONCE SELECTED FOR AVID, WHAT ARE THE STUDENT REQUIREMENTS?

AVID students must:

  • attend the AVID elective class for the whole academic year

  • maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes

  • maintain the AVID organizational system

  • complete all assignments and commit to studying when needed
